As an integrative counsellor she brings together a blend of theory which enables her to be responsive to the needs of each individual supervisee whilst also bringing clarity and sound ethical practice, based on experience of practice in counselling adults, as well as having worked extensively with children and young people.
Kirsty also holds an MA in Counselling Children and Young People and is currently working towards a PhD in the school of Psychology, Early Years and Therapeutic Studies at the University of South Wales, Newport.
Having gained extensive experience counselling clients of all ages over a number of years, Kirsty now provides consultative counselling supervision to other counsellors and professionals of all abilities.
Kirsty works with groups and individuals requiring supervision and her approach, as might be expected, reflects her broader approach to counselling practice. As an integrative counsellor she brings together a blend of theory which enables her to be responsive to the needs of each individual supervisee whilst also bringing clarity along with sound ethics to practice.
For those of you who want the theoretical detail Kirsty's approach is largely Humanistic (Person-Centered, Gestalt and Existential), with the core conditions of empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regard very much at the foundation of her work. A lot of her creative approach is placed within a Gestalt frame although she also integrates aspects of Psychodynamic Theory, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Systemic Theory, Solution Focused Approaches, Motivational and Psychoeducational Techniques.
Kirsty is naturally creative and uses aspects of this creativity in her style of supervision and is particularly well known for her use of sandtray as a reflective technique in supervision. There is no pressure to work creatively, she will always offer choice, however, this style of working can bring another level of insight to the therapeutic relationship, a more in-depth appreciation particularly for aspects of transference and counter-transference in the relationship.
Supervision of Counselling Students
Kirsty works carefully alongside all training institutions in order to support the learning of her student supervisees. As a student you can be assured of a supportive, warm and holding supervisory relationship. Supervision creates an extended learning environment to complement your educational needs, building your confidence with client work and sound ethical practice. Kirsty encourages and mindfully inspires students, nurturing self-awareness and identity as an emerging therapist.
Online & Telephone Supervision
Kirsty also offers supervision via online facilities or telephone. Mostly this is to support face to face supervision where there is already a supervision relationship in place, it can be used particularly if further support is required between regular face to face supervision appointments.
Students in particular often benefit from this approach as Kirsty is happy to be contacted to explore any difficulties or challenging circumstances that arise. Sometimes counsellors contract for ‘Online Only’ supervision, Kirsty prefers to work with students on a face to face basis and therefore restricts ‘Online Only’ supervision to qualified counsellors.
Sometimes, for whatever reason, it can be difficult to get to planned supervision appointments, Kirsty is happy to arrange full supervision sessions Online or on theTelephone instead so that valuable supervision time is not impacted due to unforeseen circumstances.
